When Should You Start Planning an Interior Painting Project?
One of the questions I’m asked throughout the year is, “When should we start planning an interior painting project?”
Most homeowners expect me to say sometime in the fall—or even after the holidays.
My answer usually surprises them.
August may be the best time to begin planning a winter interior painting project.
Not because the painting itself takes months to complete, but because the best projects are rarely the ones that come together at the last minute. They’re the ones that have been thoughtfully planned.
Why August Is the Right Time to Look at Your Home Differently
For nearly four decades, I’ve walked through thousands of homes, and I’ve noticed something that happens every August. As summer begins winding down and we start spending a little more time indoors, we begin seeing our homes differently. The hallway walls that have quietly collected years of fingerprints and scuff marks suddenly stand out. The dining room that felt perfectly fine all summer now seems a little tired. The family room where everyone gathers each evening could use a little brightening, and that bedroom you’ve been meaning to repaint for years quietly moves back onto the “someday” list.
The rooms haven’t changed. We’ve simply slowed down enough to notice them again.
That’s one of the reasons I encourage homeowners to begin planning before autumn arrives. It gives you time to think through your project without feeling rushed. You can gather color ideas, look at samples in different lighting, decide which rooms should be painted first, and schedule the work around your family’s calendar instead of trying to squeeze everything in after the holidays.
Is Winter a good Time for Interior Painting?
Another question we hear from time to time is whether winter is really a good season for interior painting. Many homeowners still remember when painting meant opening every window in the house for days because of strong paint odors.
That was certainly true years ago.
When I started in this business, paints contained much higher levels of solvents, and ventilation was an important part of every project. Fortunately, coating technology has come a long way. Today’s premium interior paints are available in low-VOC and zero-VOC formulations that dramatically reduce the odors many people remember. We still maintain good airflow whenever practical but waiting until spring simply so the windows can be open is no longer the necessity it once was.
Making Interior Painting Less Disruptive
I’ve also learned that homeowners are rarely concerned about the painting itself. What they’re really wondering is how the project will affect their daily lives. Will the furniture be everywhere? Will the house be a mess? Will we still be able to live comfortably while the work is being done?
Those are fair questions, and they’re exactly why we’ve spent years refining what we call our White Glove Approach. One of my favorite moments comes at the very end of a project. The equipment has been packed away, the furniture is back in place, and the room is ready to be lived in again. The homeowner walks in, pauses for a moment, and almost always says some version of the same thing.
